Alexa Grasso is the champ!
She shocked the world!
Valentina Shevchenko is still considered the best by many. Although she had her title taken from her UFC decided to rank Alexa Grasso above the great champion on the pound-for-pound list. They seemed to have forgotten when Grasso was beaten by Herrig, Suarez, and Esparza.
Regardless the greatest flyweight of time is looking to take back her throne. At 35 years old Shevchenko has already had a legendary career in UFC fighting at both bantamweight and flyweight but this next fight is the most important. Shevchenko does not take losing lightly and we can expect the bullet to train like never before in this training camp.
What happened in the first fight?
Grasso took the title from Shevchenko, that’s what happened. The fight was closely contested and Grasso seemed to be a formidable foe against Shevchenko. After a tough fight with Taila Santos, it seemed like Grasso was going to challenge the champion. What happened in round 4 was unexpected. A neck crank sent the bullet tapping.
It was unexpected and shocking, but it’s still hard to comprehend. Shevchenko had had enough and willingly tapped. She wasn’t knocked out, Valentina knew exactly what she had done. Grasso not known for her submissions decided to go to the ground with the great champion. Both women are known for their striking and Grasso only recently got her first submission in MMA.
To break down the rematch, you need to look deeper into both fighters and where they stand now. Grasso is six years younger than Shevchenko and she’s where Valentina wants to be. She stood toe to toe the the champion for over three rounds and eventually overcame all adversity, shutting the champion down.
For Shevchenko to lose twice in a row to Grasso would be the end of her dominant reign and is going to send her packing down the rankings as a gatekeeper. Even if Shevchenko goes up to 135 her losses to Grasso will always haunt her. It’s time for Shevchenko to take a stand for her legacy and move forward once again as a dominant champion. If she defeats Grasso in the rematch all eyes will be on her once again. A trilogy will be in question, however, it’s how Shevchenko wins that will decide that. If she finishes Grasso quickly it will be pushed back. If it’s a close fight and Valentina wins, they will soon fight again.
It’s a fight for legacy. While Grasso is fighting just to begin a legacy. You have to ask yourself are we watching the same “great” Shevchenko or has time passed her by? Alexa Grasso versus Valentina Shevchenko 2 is the fight that answers those questions, How great is Shevchenko and can she come back from defeat and rise once again?
