Billy Ray Goff – An Interview with the UFC Welterweight Knockout Artist

Share:

The most infamous fighters in history generally fall into one of 2 categories: great records or entertaining fights. Billy Ray Goff is a UFC fighter who could have a career that falls into either category. Boasting a 9-3 professional record with 7 wins by knockout, a forgettable fight is not in Billy’s vocabulary. In just 12 fights, Goff has amassed 3 title fight wins in CES and Cage Titans, ended Robson Gracie Jrs undefeated start to his career and won fight of the night accolades in his last outing against Trey Waters. Fighting out of the hardy Team Dexter Vale Tudo gym, Billy’s fights embody their motto ‘hit first, hit hard’. I would recommend anyone looking for an entertaining fight to take a deep dive into his career. I had the privilege of speaking to Billy and learning a little more about one of the UFCs most exciting up and coming prospects.

How did you get started in MMA?

I grew up wrestling. Once I got out of high school I needed something to do.

You clearly have knockout power, and entertain standing, how much wrestling comes into your game plans given the success you have on the feet?

I feel I can grapple with anyone, Wrestling is always a part of the game plan but I don’t always implement it well. I certainly neglect it because I enjoy striking. But I’m working on my composure, iq, and sticking to the game plan. Don’t need to wrestle a lot in my fights. Just at least need to establish my takedowns without rushing to them.

Do you have any MMA heroes?

MMA heroes? Hero isn’t the right word. Idol is Demetrious Johnson and GSP

Which Anime character would do best in the UFC?

Without powers? Rock Lee

What do you want to be remembered for at the end of your career?

I want to be remembered as a good person and the best fighter that’s done it. I would like to be remembered as being tough as fuck but I feel like I’ve already checked that box.

Can you give us any updates on your next fight?

I said yes to a fight for early next year

Who is your dream opponent from the history of UFC?

Dream opponent? Prime GSP

What is it about GSP that stands out for you?

GSP was/is physical, mental, and technical challenge. He’s so well rounded. He’s better than most guys at WW nowadays in my eyes. He had few holes. Had a phenomenal team around him. It’s such a massive challenge that others don’t pose in my eyes.

Who is your Mount Rushmore of the UFC?

GSP, DJ, Anderson Silva, and Jon Jones

When you’re not training what are you getting up to?

Outside of training it’s D&D, work, coaching, video games, watching anime & movies, reading, & playing with my kitty

If you had to show someone a single fight to get them into MMA what would it be?

A single fight? Would have to be Dustin Poirer vs Dan hooker or Rory Macdonald Vs Robbie lawler

If you weren’t a UFC fighter what would you be?

If I wasn’t a ufc fighter I’d be a bum hitchhiking across the world

Do you have any places In the world you would want to travel to?

Japan, China, Russia, Ireland, Iceland, Canada, Brazil, Mexico, Bahamas, Cuba, Jamaica, Egypt, India, Australia, South Korea, Greece, Italy, Hawaii, Alaska, and probably more lol

Billy’s UFC journey continues early 2025 and is guaranteed to be an instant classic. Thank you Billy for your time today.
