Premiered on November 8, 2024, Netflix’s “The Cage” series sparked some talks amongst the MMA community, as it featured fighters like Georges St-Pierre, Ciryl Gane, Morgan Charrière, Taylor Lapilus and Abdoul “Lazy King” Abdouraguimov. But even despite such a stacked cast, the majority of people were focused on the appearance of former light heavyweight and current heavyweight UFC World Champion Jon Jones.
Why it is a problem (Spoilers Warning)
On the show that follows a French MMA fighter Taylor Keita, Jon Jones makes a cameo in the fifth, final episode, helping the main character out when he starts to think about quitting the sport. Jones ultimately is on “the good side” with the main character, whose goal is to defeat “the bad guy” in Ibrahim Ibara.
What makes Ibrahim a villain, besides being a gym bully, is his attachment to the stabbing of Boss, Taylor’s coach, and the fact that he brutally assaulted a girl he was going out with. Boss had the proof of the attack, so Ibrahim wanted this man dead. Later, during the second fight between Keita and Ibara, Taylor tells his opponent that the evidence is going to reach the police no matter what, so the criminal faces the real consequences of his disgusting actions.
Do you see where I am going with it?
Jones’ domestic battery charges from September 2021 can’t just be forgotten, especially in the context of the show’s judgment towards a fictional character for a very similar behaviour.
While Jon’s domestic battery charges were dismissed, as documented in the police report, Jessie Moses told the police, that Jones “touched the back of my head and pulled my hair a little bit but he did not hit me or anything.” Also, as per the same report, Moses “was bleeding from her nose/mouth.”
And mind you, this was not the only instance of Jones reportedly acting aggressively towards women. Does anyone still remember the May 2024 incident, when Jon allegedly threatened and took the cell phone of a Drug-Free Sport International official?
According to the reports, Jones also appeared to be intoxicated that day.
The charges, yet again, were dismissed under the condition of Jon attend the anger management classes. Because it is exactly the proved measure for people like Jones and McGregor to deal with their issues and make society safer, right?
