The Irish superstar, Conor McGregor, has pledged that he will return to welterweight after winning the lightweight belt.
McGregor has fought three welterweights in the UFC, the last of those fights against Donald Cerrone. Most of his career was spent fighting featherweight and to some extent lightweight. In his last fight against Dustin Poirier at the UFC 257 event, McGregor returned to the lightweight division and lost in the second round by knockout. He will be back again in the lightweight division this summer in a fight against Dustin Poirier.
Through his social media, especially Twitter, the day after Kamaru Usman defeated Jorge Masvidal at UFC 261, McGregor has said he would return to welterweight after winning the lightweight belt. The plan is for Conor and Dustin to fight their third fight this summer at a UFC 264 event, and UFC 262 winner Michael Chandler will likely fight Charles Oliveira on the belt later this year. Once Conor takes that belt, he says he’ll be next to fight Usman or any other fighter who is the welterweight champion.
Sure, Conor has been impressive in the lightweight division and was exceptional in the featherweight, but in welterweight, he is likely to be smaller when compared to heavier fighters, especially wrestlers like Kamaru Usman or Colby Covington but of course, McGregor is incredibly confident. We’ll see if he keeps up with this plan and if he’s fighting at welterweight next year.
