Derrick Lewis to rematch Ngannou for the belt?

Speaking on the Ariel Helwani show, while not completely confirming the bout, Lewis indicated that he has in fact been contacted by the UFC and that he is ‘happy they finally came to him, they might be getting the deal done, they might not’ he went on to say ‘I’ve got the fight, we are just waiting to see what date Francis wants to get it on on’

As we all know the main target for Ngannou’s first defense was going to be Jon Jones, however with the very public money dispute between the UFC and Jones it seems like we are quite far away from that bout being confirmed.

Which brings up the question of who, if anyone, will Ngannou fight in the mean time. As a lot of people will remember these 2 heavyweight knockout artists have already met in what both fighters have described as on of their worst performances. So it is understandable that both men would want to try and put a definitive stamp on that fight.

Both men are coming off of extremely imoressive knockout finishes, with Francis beating the consensus greatest heavy weight of all time for the belt and Lewis coming in against Curtis Blaydes as an underdog before finishing him with a brutal uppercut.

Lewis has had one shot at the belt previously in a losing effort to then champion Daniel Cormier so it is very understandable that he would want another crack at not just heavyweight gold, but underlining a win he is disappointed in.

As Lewis goes on to say it they will have to ‘see what happens with Jones’ but all indications are that the UFC are actively seeking other opponents with Lewis being at the top of that list
