UFC London: Aspinall vs. Tybura Preview

The UFC is set to return to the UK for the fourth time in a year this Saturday, as heavyweight contenders take centre stage at London’s 02 Arena. Dana White’s promotion attracts thousands of passionate fans whenever it travels across the Atlantic, and UFC Fight Night 224 looks ready to bring the heat to the capital once more. Headlined by a showdown between Manchester-born sensation Tom Aspinall and experienced Polish titan Marcin Tybura, British MMA enthusiasts will yet again get to witness some of the country’s top talents on a global platform. Here’s a rundown of Saturday’s card: Preliminary Card Jafel Filho vs. Daniel Barez: Flyweight Shauna Bannon vs. Bruna Brasil: Women’s Strawweight Chris Duncan vs. Yanal Ashmouz: Lightweight Ketlen Vieira vs. Pannie Kianzad: Women’s Bantamweight Makhmud Muradov vs. Bryan Barberena: Middleweight Mick Parkin vs. Jamal Pogues: Heavyweight Marc Diakiese vs. Joel Alvarez: Lightweight Danny Roberts vs. Jonny Parsons: Welterweight Davey Grant vs. Daniel Marcos: Bantamweight In a stacked preliminary card filled with both young prospects and competent veterans, there’s a few fights fans should certainly watch out for. Mick Parkin (6-0) makes his promotion debut in the second half of the prelims, following on from his Contender Series win against Eduardo Neves via first round rear-naked choke. English fans have waited eagerly for 11 months for the homegrown talent to enter the UFC octagon. The 27-year-old is a knockout specialist with five of his six wins coming in said fashion. Formerly fighting in Rise and Conquer, Parkin has six finishes to his professional record, four of these coming in the first round. He’ll be taking on another fighter signed from the Contender Series in Jamal Pogues (10-3); ‘The Stormtrooper‘ previously fought in LFA, and won his UFC debut against Josh Parisian back in February. Most UFC fans will be well-aware of Marc Diakiese, who first became known on the promotion scene for the vast array of strikes in his arsenal, as well as his flamboyant celebrations. Since then, it’s far to say the 30-year-old has been through an inconsistent period, often struggling to put together a solid number of victories. ‘Bonecrusher’ has become more conservative in recent times, earning two wins and a loss in his last three fights. Diakiese is scheduled to meet Spanish lightweight Joel Alvarez, who has become increasingly inactive in recent times. ‘El Fenomeno‘s last fight came in February 2022, in a second round TKO loss to Arman Tsarukyan. Alvarez had experienced a promising promotion career until that point, going into the Tsarukyan clash on a four-fight all-finishing win streak. It will be intruiging to see whether the 30-year-old’s inactivity hampers his performance levels. Main Card Lerone Murphy vs. Joshua Culibao: Featherweight The UFC career of Lerone Murphy (12-0-1) is one filled partly with promise, but ultimately with frustration. The Englishman was first signed to the promotion back in 2019, and has subsequently had five fights cancelled with just one being due to self-reasoning. ‘The Miracle‘ has always been an exhilirating fighter to watch since back in his FCC days, and fans were ecstatic in March to hear he’d be meeting Nathaniel Wood in the octagon at UFC 286 for a war of countrymen. This bout was unfortunately scrapped due to an injury for Wood, and March 18th saw Murphy beat Gabriel Santos via split decision instead. His opponent, Australian fighter Josh Culibao (11-1-1), will be looking to earn his fourth straight win under the UFC banner. ‘Kuya‘ suffered his sole career loss in his promotion debut back in 2020 against Jalin Turner on short notice, and has since gone on to overcome Shayilan Nuerdanbieke, Seung Woo Choi and Melsik Baghdasaryan. At 29-years-old, the future is still bright for the Aussie. Jai Herbert vs. Fares Ziam: Lightweight Fighting out of the West Midlands, Jai Herbert (12-4-1) is no stranger to a UK-based UFC event, yet Saturday will be his main card debut. ‘The Black Country Banger‘ consistently delivers action-packed fights for the fans, with just two of his six promotion bouts making the final bell. Herbert drew last time out against Ludovit Klein on the undercard for UFC 286 back in March, and will be looking to go three fights undefeated for the first time under the promotion banner. Team Renegade is quickly becoming one of Europe’s leading MMA gyms, and Herbert will need to take heed of his coaches’ advice as he looks to overcome French all-rounder Fares Ziam. The 26-year-old comes into the contest nine years younger than his octagon counterpart, and will be looking to build upon his decision win last time out against Michal Figlak. Saturday will act as ‘Smile Killer‘s first appearance in almost 11 months, so it’s yet to be seen whether ring-rust will be a deciding factor in this bout. Most will be in agreeance that this matchup is more than worthy of a main card spot. Paul Craig vs. André Muniz: Middleweight Paul Craig (16-6-1) is thought of by many as the UFC’s most unorthodox fighter, and it’s no surprise to see the Scotsman return for another London event. Saturday will mark ‘Bearjew‘s middleweight career debut, following 23 professional fights at light heavyweight. The 35-year-old is widely known for his willingness to gift his opponents top position where he can work at them with bottom striking and triangle chokes. This can lead to Craig putting on a mix of entertaining and frustrating bouts, and it will be interesting to see how a harsher weight cut will affect his gameplan, or even his overall performance levels. Some may find the decision to drop a weight class intelligent, however, given his devastating first round knockout loss to Johnny Walker back in January. Standing in the way of a 17th career win will be Brazilian submission specialist André Muniz (23-5), who also comes into the contest off the back of a loss to Brendan Allen respectively. When two wrestling-heavy fighters come face-to-face, fans can weirdly often expect a standing-orientated matchup. This duo have only heard the final bell five

3 Fights you can’t sleep on for UFC London

With the UFC returning to The O2 Arena for the first time since 2019, it is obviously stacked with British fighters from top to bottom which is a UK MMA fan’s dream. I am here to tell you what fights that shouldn’t be going under the radar ahead of the highly anticipated fight night in London.   Jai Herbert v Ilia Topuria When Mike Davis pulled out of the fight v Jai Herbert in mid-January, step forward Ilia Topuria who was willing to make his debut at 155 to face off against the former Cage Warriors champion in his own country. After pulling out of his fight v Charles Jourdain on the day of weigh-ins, Topuria has decided to take a fight a weight class above, however whether this is a permanent stay at 155 remains to be seen. It doesn’t get any easier for Jai Herbert who has had an extremely tough start to his UFC career, facing the likes of Renato Moicano and Francisco Trinaldo. This is his first fight in front of a crowd in the UFC. With it being in his home country, no one will want to make a bigger impact and maximise the potential than the Black Country Banger. Stylistically this is an excellent match up, with ‘El Matador’ having knockout power with his brutal finish of Ryan Hall but is also a very slick Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu player. Jai Herbert will be wary of the threat of his Jiu-Jitsu game, having faced excellent Jiu-Jitsu players such as Renato Moicano in his previous UFC bouts. But the power of Herbert just is respected, especially of his finish of Karma Worthy. This no doubt will be an excellent fight with 2 up and comers in the UFC, yet again showing excellent matchmaking from the UFC. Jack Shore v Timur Valiev The Tank is back once again and this time it is against Dagestan native Valiev. Shore will be looking to build on his win v Sholinian and increase his undefeated record to 16-0. After original opponent Umar Nurmagomedov pulled out, there wouldn’t be many better replacements than Valiev who most recently put on a fight of the night vs Raoni Barcelos almost 9 months ago. Shore, who will be making his first appearance in front of a UK crowd will be looking to make it 5 UFC wins in a row in a bid to be pushing for a top 15 spot, whilst proving why he is one of the best young guns and prospects in the UFC at only 27 years old. The big question will be how Shore decides to approach the fight, he has excellent wrestling but is also very impressive on his feet, however, Valiev is very similar to Shore. This even match up makes it very hard to call on how the fight will go and who will decide to take charge. Shore shows tremendous pressure to cut the cage off and forces his opponents to take backwards steps whilst ranging up his shots and there will always be the threat of the takedown which is always keeping his opponents on his toes. This is definitely a fight you can’t sleep on, especially with both fighters pushing for a Top 15 spot.   Mike Grundy v Makwan Amirkhani The bout that was originally booked for the cancelled UFC London in 2020 gets rebooked this time 2 years later. A match up with both fighters’ high wrestling pedigrees will provide a grappling enthusiast’s dream. Mike Grundy got a bronze medal in the 2014 Commonwealth games with Great Britain and Amirkhani had much success in his native Finland with an Amateur Wrestling pedigree. Amirkhani, who has faced a lot of fights v the Brits in his career, is looking to extend his good record v British fighters however in his last fight he came short due to a brutal knee from Lerone Murphy. With Mike Grundy also coming off a loss with a split decision v Lando Vannata at UFC 262. Both fighters are only losing streaks, which means that they will have a lot to fight for, which potentially could be either fighter’s last fight in the UFC. The stakes will be high for this bout at the O2 Arena. The fight will be decided on who is going to be smarter in the wrestling exchanges and is willing to be the first to engage, as many times in fights it is possible that both fighters will be wary of each other’s strengths, which can lead to them being reluctant to grapple. I can see the grappling exchanges going back and forth, I won’t be surprised to see this fight going the distance.     If these fights don’t leave you on the edge of your seat whether you are watching them in the arena, or at home, I will be very surprised. I can’t wait for March 19th and it is definitely going to be a special night in London.

Jai Herbert Talks About UFC Fight Island

Thoughts on debut: There were a few frustrations when London was cancelled but you’ve got to stay positive and look to the future. I was taking a few injuries into the fight but they are now healed and I’m feeling fresh. I’ve taken the fitness and experience from that camp into this one and it’s made me better. I’m really excited to make my debut in a few days’ time. I’ve been working towards this for years and it is finally here. I’ll take the opportunity and get the win. On his mentality: It’s great to be here but I want to make an impact. A lot of people just want to say they fight in the UFC but I’m here to further my career. I’m not here to play and just be a number. I’m here to be a contender. That’s what it is all about – creating a legacy. On his opponent: He has had 14 of 15 fights in the UFC and is obviously a veteran. He seems like a very strong guy, a southpaw so it will be a tough challenge. These challenges excite me and it’s why I’m in the sport. It’s all about seeing how good I can be and how much I can improve. I want to get better every day and take people like this on. It will be a great test and come 25th July we will see where I am at. On the fight: He’s a tough guy and has never been stopped. I’m prepared for three solid five minute rounds but I’m always looking to finish. If you look back at my career I’m not going for points but to take people down. I’m going to get him out of there. On fighting behind closed doors: I’m prepared for it. I’m not really bothered by that aspect right now. At the end of the day it’s always just me and another guy in that cage. When the other guy is coming at you to take your head off you are just focussing on that. It’s great to have fans there to support but I need to switch off from that and focus on executing my game plan and getting the job done. On learning from Leon: I’ve learnt a huge amount from Leon and Tom Breese. Tom is my coach and his experience has bought me on tenfold. I train and spar with Leon which is amazing. He is world class and I have no doubt he will be the next welterweight champion from Britain. It’s priceless to train with these guys and get their knowledge. On the importance of MMA: I would 100% recommend the sport to kids. It helps you a lot – it keeps you disciplined, focussed and gives you a goal to aim for. A lot of kids growing up don’t have goals or hope really. MMA allows you to focus and when you start seeing results it helps you grow as a person. That’s what kids need and that’s why they should take up the sport. It will make them a better person. On his style: I’m always putting on show. I don’t go for points I go the stoppage. I’m a lethal striker and you can expect me to put in a performance you won’t forget.

The Renegade Rider featuring Cage Warriors fighter Jai Herbert

The Cage Warriors lightweight division has a stacked deck with many fighters having a chip on their shoulder and looking to prove a point. In today’s episode of Across The Pond, you will meet a renegade rider looking for the trifecta at Cage Warriors 102 on March 2. A professional since March 2015 and representing Team Renegade, Jai Herbert holds a 7-1 record in eight career bouts as a professional comprised of five knockouts, one decision and one submission. Prior to making his debut appearance with Cage Warriors in 2018, Herbert competed with Full Contact Contender and BAMMA. He is currently 2-0 under the Cage Warriors banner. In his MMA debut at Full Contact Contender 12, Herbert defeated Omid Mohamadi via TKO in the second round. He also defeated Martin Sweeney via TKO in round two at Full Contact Contender 13. Then in his debut outing with BAMMA at BAMMA 23 Night of Champions, Herbert knocked out Ben Bennett in the second round. At BAMMA 25 Champion versus Champion, he submitted Tony Morgan via rear naked choke in round two. For his final outing with BAMMA at BAMMA 29 Herbert defeated Rick Selvarajah via TKO in the second round. In his debut appearance with Cage Warriors at Cage Warriors 94 that also marked the promotion’s debut on Belgian soil, he defeated Erdi Karatas via unanimous decision. For his second outing with Cage Warriors at Cage Warriors 100 Herbert defeated Joe McColgan via TKO in the first round to earn back to back wins with Cage Warriors. The victory also earned Herbert his fifth knockout win as a professional. At Cage Warriors 102 on March 2, Herbert will look to make it three for three with Cage Warriors when he takes on submission specialist Steve O’ Keefe in a lightweight encounter that pits one of the division’s rising heavy hitters against a savvy veteran. Good luck Jai! Jai’s first round TKO victory at Cage Warriors 100 against Joe McColgan

Cage Warriors newcomer Jai Herbert talks of title ambitions ahead of CW94 showdown

Cage Warriors 94 takes place this coming weekend (June 16th) from the Lotto Arena in Antwerp, Belgium with newcomer Jai Herbert stepping on to foreign soil when he makes his promotional debut. Herbert is 5-1 as a professional having made his last four appearances under the BAMMA banner going 3-1 in the process. His sole loss came to upcoming BAMMA lightweight title challenger Rhys McKee back in 2016. Herbert will take on Netherlands’ Edri Karatas (9-4) who has made his last four appearances on Belgium’s regional circuit. I caught up with Jai Herbert ahead of his Cage Warriors debut to get his views on the fight and what he has planned going forward. “I’m excited to fight on Cage Warriors! It’s one of the best promotions and platforms in Europe. I’m looking to make a big statement in the lightweight division this year” Herbert told me when I asked how he felt about signing for the promotion. Herbert has set up camp in Birmingham with Team Renegade who are currently producing some of Europe’s best MMA talent. He is happy with his preparations and how camp has gone leading up to the fight. “Fight camp has gone fantastic. As you know I am now fighting out of Renegade and I’ve had some world class sparring/training partners for this camp which has really pushed me to another level. I’m feeling physically in the best shape I’ve been…my weight is on point, feeling ready to go”. I asked Jai what the recipe was that made Renegade such a popular and successful base for UK talent at the moment. “Renegade has got top-level coaches headed by Tom Breese who currently fights in the UFC. The team has some of the top fighters in the UK meaning we have a good mix of training and sparring partners at a really high level. It’s a professional, hard-working atmosphere and there are people to look up to and motivate you there”. Herbert’s opponent, Erdi Karatas, is currently riding a 4 fight win streak with 3 of those wins coming inside the distance, and with all 5 of his own wins coming by stoppage, he is expecting an entertaining affair when the two come to blows despite not knowing a great deal about his opponent. “(I have) just seen his record, seen a few of his fights to get a feel for his style but that is it really”. “I see it being an exciting fight” Herbert stated. “My opponent is a tough guy but I see my skill and fitness taking over and me ending the fight in the second round”. I asked if there was a name in mind if Herbert gets his hand raised this weekend, and despite refusing to look passed his opponent, he will be keeping an eye out for the result of the lightweight title fight between Paddy Pimblett and Soren Bak in Liverpool in September “I’m not looking past this weekend. I like to stay 100% focused on each fight, but obviously, I’ll have my eye closely on the lightweight title fight coming up”. Cage Warriors has been a fantastic launch pad to a career in the UFC over the last few years and with that in mind, Herbert laid out his career plans and where he sees himself in the next 2 years. “In 2 years time, I see myself with the Cage Warriors title and in the UFC!”. In doing so, Herbert would join the likes of Michael Bisping, Dan Hardy, Conor McGregor and more recently Nathaniel Wood in making the switch to MMA’s premier organisation and despite insisting he is taking things one step at a time, it is clear that Jai Herbert knows what he wants and is fully focused on the task at hand. Cage Warriors goes down on Saturday, June 16th from the Lotto Arena in Belgium.
