06 Jan Will The UFC Really Strip Conor McGregor?
Dana White has said that if Conor McGregor wants to wait until August or September to return he will strip ‘The Notorious One’ of his UFC lightweight title and make Khabib Nurmagomedov fight Tony Ferguson for the undisputed title.
Personally, I think this is the right call. I’ve said it before that the UFC has been far too lenient with McGregor, and it looks as though the UFC has had enough. Of course, things get said and nothing happens or it might just be a play to get McGregor back in the cage in March. The Irishman is by far the biggest draw in the sport, would they really risk upsetting McGregor in this way, it certainly looks like a high stakes poker game, who will blink first?
McGregor, of course, will do what he wants, and he as already said pay me and he will return, but after the astronomical purse he got for fighting Floyd Mayweather, can the UFC afford him now? McGregor can return to boxing and earn far more and does he really have that same hunger and desire he once had?
McGregor famously said we are not here just to take part, we are here to take over, but now is it just over. He has conquered much, and is he happy with what he has done, is there another mountain to climb, something that can really tempt him back, and with it the type of money he wants? Time will tell.
The UFC show will go on, and the whole MMA world can’t stand still waiting for McGregor to decide what he wants to do. I read elsewhere recently that it’s not a case of people hating on Conor, it’s just the vast majority just want to see him fight again and defend his belt, and I agree totally; rather than and still, all we want is, and finally.
