There is always something new happening in MMA. Be it a unique submission, a rarely seen style or a new-found effective strike. However new injuries finishing fights is something of a rarity.

But a strange finish is exactly what we got last night in the UFC Fight Night: Holloway vs. Oliveira headliner as Max Holloway (14-3) was awarded a technical knockout. The finish happened shortly before, as little over a minute into the 1st round Charles Oliveira (20-5) double-leg takedown attempt was stuffed. Moments later he grabbed his neck area, held is arm out in an attempt to stop Holloway attacking him further and fell to the floor. The official signalled the end of the fight and fans in the arena and watching at home scratched their heads and wondered what the heck had just happened.

Well now we know.

According to the UFCOliveira has suffered a microscopic tear to his esophagus and is now expected to be hospitalised, though it is unclear if her will require surgery.
