There’s plenty of recent rumors going around of a possible lightweight title fight between, 155lbs champion, Khabib Nurmagomedov and Conor McGregor. However, Tony Ferguson is doing everything possible to keep his name in the title conversation.

Tony Ferguson was scheduled to face the unbeaten Nurmagomedov in April at UFC223 in a bout that would have determined the latest UFC‘s undisputed champion. Unfortunately for Ferguson he was forced to withdraw from the title fight due to a serious knee injury he acquired during trauning. This also happened to be the fourth time the bout between the two was scrapped due to unfortunate circumstances.

As a result of Tony’s injury, this meant that the UFC had to find an immediate replacement. At UFC223, Khabib ended up facing Al Iaquinta for the title after various other opponents stepped up for the fight, butbthey had to drop out for certain reasons. Nurmagomedov’s opponents could have been Max Holloway, Anthony Pettis or Paul Felder.

As well as Tony’s injury causing this fight initial set backs, Conor McGregor caused chaos at the media day, which led to certain fights being cancelled. Due to this incident, there is a considerable amount of hype around the hope that Khabib Nurmagomedov will eventually fight this Irish superstar.

“El Cuccy” recently spoke with Helen Yee about his recovery and the possibilities of fighting Khabib. During this time Ferguson said (via MMAFighting):

“Don’t know, haven’t heard shit” Ferguson said “what I know I’ve been keeping my nose clean, making sure my leg is healing right. As for as how the fights are gonna go, the fans want to see myself and Khabib. That’s what they really want to see. Conor got his s**t going on – slap on the wrist, whatever, that’s not my business – so if the s**t happens and they want to go with Khabib, let’s do this. Let’s have some fun with it.”

“I’m about 90 percent right now”, Ferguson also added whilst discussing the timeframe of his return. ” Obviously, I want to get back in there. September looks good for me.”

Even though plenty of fans want to see Ferguson finally fight Nurmagomedov, it is hard to imagine the UFC setting up this fight again. This is because of this fight being set various times before. Due to the incident with McGregor at media day, this fight would also depend on whether legal issues and the UFC allow him to fight again this year.

Tony Ferguson is currently on a ten fight winning streak with his last win being Kevin Lee at UFC 216.
