Liam Fullerton – “It’s gonna be a good card”

Liam Fullerton 1-1-0 is a Scottish amateur Mixed Martial Artist currently competing in the Bantamweight division, representing Jax MMA. He has competed for Battle Arena, Almighty Fighting Championship and is set to make his debut for On Top Promotions on September 10th.

I’d like to take this opportunity to thank you for taking the time to speak to me today Liam, and also to congratulate you on your upcoming inclusion to the incredibly stacked On Top 24 card.

“Cheers man, I appreciate that.”

I hope training camp has been going well in the build-up to your scheduled return to the cage.

“Aye, it’s going good, plenty more to go.”

One of the biggest Scottish MMA organisations is back, many exceptional MMA practitioners have graced the On Top cage and given fight fans some of the most explosive highlight reels the UK has ever seen. What does it mean to be part of their 24th card to date?

“Aye, it’s good, pretty exciting because my coach has always spoken about On Top. To finally get a fight there is pretty exciting.”

It’s shaping up to be a phenomenal card, well worth the wait.

So early on into your amateur journey, you have been a part of some of the biggest cards the UK has to offer in Battle Arena, Almighty Fighting Championship and now On Top. For the readers and fans that will be in attendance at the On-X leisure centre, can you give us a little insight into what first attracted you to the brutal yet exhilarating world of Mixed Martial Arts?

“I always enjoyed watching MMA, I got stuck in and I absolutely loved it.”

Exactly how I started to become a fan many years back, after watching UFC 47, Robbie Lawler vs Nick Diaz. pretty much spent the rest of the week watching any and all MMA I could find.

With such a resume on the UK scene, you have set the bar pretty high when it comes to your scheduled outings. Many have followed on from these organisations to go to some of the biggest organisations within the MMA world. Have you set your sights on one of these big promotions after you eventually switch to the professional circuit?

“Obviously, everybody wants to be in the UFC don’t they? But now there are the likes of PFL who have a huge card coming up, along with Bellator. They’re all big, I think I’d be quite happy competing for any of them, to be honest, but UFC Is the ultimate goal.”

I have to agree, PFL and Bellator have recruited quite a lot of UK talent in the past few weeks for their upcoming cards.

“Especially Scottish talent like Stevie Ray, and Chris Ducan recently earning a UFC contract.”

I stayed up to watch Chris on Dana White’s Contender series. absolutely outstanding performance thoroughly deserved that contract, he worked so hard for it.

“Yeah, I watched his bout, it was brilliant. He put his heart into it.”

Looking ahead, you are set to take on Cateran MMA’s Kev Brown, A veteran of the On Top cage. What do you make of Kev in the build-up to your scheduled meeting on September 10th?

It’s definitely going to be a barn burner of a matchup, and be quite an explosive collision. There are so many great bouts that have been announced already, all have fireworks written all over them.

“Aye, they keep releasing fights and they’re all pretty exciting, it’s gonna be a good card.”

Your sights will no doubt be set on victory, without giving too much away what steps have you been taking to make sure you walk out with your arm raised at the end of the night and another W to your amateur record?

“Just making myself all-rounded, being prepared for anything. I’ve been pushing myself harder than I did in my last bout, the last one didn’t go my way but I think that was a silly mistake on my behalf, to be honest. There’s not much I can change really apart from not making the same mistakes.”

The best way forward. keep doing you, keep the proverbial tools sharpened and make sure you’re one hundred percent ready at night.

“Absolutely.”

On Top is going all out to make sure their 24th card to date is one the fans of Linwood will not soon forget. Other than your inclusion on the night are there any matchups in particular that you’re looking forward to witnessing?

“Looking forward to the championship fights definitely, they’ll be exciting to watch. My teammate Harry Welsh is also on the card, he’s got my support, I’ll be in his corner and he’ll be in mine.”

Always great to have teammates fighting on the same card, give you that extra bit of confidence going in.

“We’ve seen each other each and every time, always looking after each other.”

Always good to go to battle with your brother.

“Yeah, absolutely.”

It’s been a pleasure speaking with you today Liam and I look forward to witnessing your journey unfold.

Last but not least do you have a message for the fans that will be in attendance and anybody you’d like to give a shout-out to?

“Of course the whole team at Jax who have been with me from the start, and I’m sure will be with me until the end as well.”

Tickets are still available from the fighters for what’s set to be a night of pure unadulterated organised violence in Linwood. Also available from the On Top Facebook page.
