Former UFC Lightweight fighter “The Motown Phenom” Kevin Lee, who has recently signed with the newly-formed Global Fight League (GFL) has revealed that former UFC Interim Lightweight Champion Tony Ferguson has been discussed to join the new promotion for a potential rematch with Lee.
Lee was recently interviewed on The Ariel Helwani Show, explaining how this happened. He said “April 4th is the first event. I heard a couple names tossed around. The one that interests me the most is Tony Ferguson. I think Tony, he had his ups and downs in his career but we’ve had a great fight for the UFC championship and I think that it’s something a lot of people can get behind and that’s a fight I really really want. So April 4th is the first event. We are about 4 months out, you know.”
The two have met before in October 2017 for the UFC Interim Lightweight Championship due to Conor McGregor (champion at the time) being inactive inside the octagon. After a great first round for Lee, Ferguson managed to sink in a triangle choke in round three, causing the Motown Phenom to tap out. The possibility of a rematch makes a lot of sense for the two fighters, as they both have not been on a good run as of late.
In September, The Motown Phenom secured a first-round rear naked choke submission win against Thiago Oliveira in a local Michigan promotion called Lights Out Championship. This was after Lee returned from retirement due to a string of losses in the UFC, with a brief stint in Eagle FC in between that.
“El Cucuy” has not been any better. He has lost his last eight fights in the UFC, which is the record for the most consecutive losses in UFC history. His most recent loss was in August when he lost via rear naked choke to Michael Chiesa. After the fight, Ferguson had doubts as to whether or not it was time to hang up the gloves.
