UFC 2018 – The Year of Champion v Champion

With the announcement of Stipe Miocic v Daniel Cormier for the UFC Heavyweight Title, is this a sign of things to come this year.

It’s the 25th anniversary of the UFC and we have been promised some exciting match ups, Cormier trying for a second UFC title is the start, and it looks like similar match ups are on the way.

Already in the works we hear are Cris Cyborg v Amanda Nunes and maybe Demetrious Johnson v TJ Dillishaw in two more champion v champion battles inside the Octagon.

Dana White thinks Brock Lesnar will return also, which gives you an idea what the UFC is after for its anniversary year. It’s also why I think for both Conor McGregor and indeed the UFC, it would be better in some ways if McGregor wasn’t the UFC Champion, then he would be clear to fight the likes of Nate Diaz and GSP.

Of course there is a downside, divisions are held up, and contenders are denied opportunities to fight for a title. The other problem is what if Cormier, Nunes and Dillishaw win, it creates obvious problems in both of their weight divisions.

I can understand in its special year the UFC wants to put on these special attractions, but going forward it needs to be more progressive in building its divisions and promoting the contenders that will one day be their champions.
