03 Jan Khabib v McGregor 2 will it happen this year? Dana White hopeful. Abdelaziz rules out Ferguson.
Dana White is hopeful that a Khabib Nurmagomedov v Conor McGregor rematch can take place this year.
There is obviously still some way to go before a rematch can be made due to both fighters still to find out their fate from the Nevada State Athletic Commission for their parts in the aftermath of the first fight.
White appears to suggest he would like to see them both fight someone else and then meet later in the year.
In the first match, Nurmagomedov won in a dominant fashion and some would say, does McGregor deserve a rematch this year?
“I think a lot of people want to see that fight,” White said, speaking to TMZ Sports. “We gotta see how this thing [plays out]. Obviously, again, we haven’t gone in front of the Nevada State Athletic Commission. That’s gotta happen and when it does we can figure out how this whole thing plays out.
“Is Max [Holloway] moving to 155? … Tony Ferguson’s obviously in the mix … We gotta see how this thing plays out.”
“Obviously, guys are going to have to win and it depends how long the suspensions are, but yeah, as long as everything goes right this fight should happen [this year],” White concluded.
Nurmagomedov’s manager Ali Abdelaziz has said that Khabib won’t fight Tony Ferguson next as he needs to fight someone who brings PPV money to the table.
Abdelaziz told MMA Fighting:
“At the end of the day, Khabib doesn’t need to fight anybody else for his legacy. He’s done what he’s done. He’s 27-0, he’s 12-0 in the UFC, he’s never been dropped, he’s never been caught, he’s never been knocked down.
“Let’s talk about a GOAT. No PEDs. We talk about the greatest of all-time, I think that he should be on top of the list because he never lost to anybody. He’s never lost, he’s never been dropped, he’s never been stitched, nothing.”
“So the biggest money-fight he can make. Boxing, MMA, whatever. I love Tony Ferguson— he’s not that, I can tell you that.
“One-hundred per cent, Tony Ferguson is not the next fight, because Tony Ferguson — I need somebody who can sell pay-per-views.
“At the end of the day, it will be the exact same situation. Khabib was supposed to fight Eddie Alvarez, remember that? When he got taken out. We understood it because Conor’s going to bring pay-per-views. We need people who can help us sell pay-per-views, and that’s it.”
